Not illustrated. 1844 Excerpt: ... powerful effect of igneous action. The strata vary in thickness from a few inches to many feet, and are divided by joints into rectangular or rhomboidal fragments. It alternates with all the other primary rocks, especially gneiss and micaslate, of which it then seems a mere variety, and is frequently found forming the summits of the hills and ridges. The most continuous tracts of it are in Islay, Jura where it has a thickness of 2200 feet, and in Sutherland, between Loehs Eribol and Assynt. The regions where it abounds have a very peculiar aspect, the hills being in general conoidal, with a smooth flowing outline and few asperities, though with numerous scattered fragments. The soil that covers them is remarkable for sterility even in this land of barrenness; whilst their summits and declivities, refusing nourishment to the humblest moss, shine with dazzling whiteness. Of this kind is the conical Stack Balloch-nan-fey, the last remarkable mountain on the west coast, whose naked ridge of bright quartz shines in the sun like snow, and was described by Pennant as marble.--(M'Culloch on Quartz Rock, Geol. Tramsa, vols. i. and iv.) Mica-slate possesses a more decided slaty structure than gneiss, and a simpler composition, being regularly a compound of quartz and mica. Sometimes the latter, sometimes the former, predominates; whilst more rarely a third substance, as hornblende, felspar, chlorite, talc, or, in a few instances, carbonate of lime, is added. In some varieties the quartz is laminar, with distinct scales of mica interposed, when the rock appears fibrous; and when also compact, sparkling, and very quartose, is named avanturine, which takes a fine polish, and is most esteemed of a reddish yellow or brown colour.
