This collection of holiday Gregorian chants was released in 1994, hoping to ride the unexpected wave of enthusiasm for the ancient monk music created by the astonishing pop chart ascension of the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos' Chant earlier that year. Listeners hoping for Christmas cheer will be somewhat disappointed. These chants were composed for recitation during the Advent season, but the only way to discern a Christmas message is to translate from Latin. This recording nonetheless distinguishes itself from Chant and other Gregorian collections through the unusual inclusion of children's voices. After an opening track, "Populus Syon," sung entirely by men, the children are introduced on the following track, "Ecce carissimi." Eventually the two choruses are joined, and they continue to alternate throughout the record. "Antiphonae" introduces a third set of voices, presumably a group of older boys. Some of the pieces, notably "Domine Jesu Christe/Etenium sederum," add further variety through the interaction between the choruses and a soloist. It is a creative approach to alleviating the monotony of the simple monophonic melodies. The liner notes explain the origins of these techniques: "Major advancements in the craft of polyphony were produced by a school of composers working at the Church of Notre Dame in Paris, France. These composers expanded the musical score from two voices to three or four voices." The result is a peaceful and soothing collection of music that is appropriate for any season. ~ Evan Cater, Rovi
