Some of the adverbs given above, such as ye, firiv, S?;, rot, do not correspond exactly to any one English word. The translation given in the list may serve to show their general force, but their precise shades of meaning can only be learnt by attentive reading. 97. Remarks on the Syntax of the Adverbs. The adverb often stands for an attributive adjective between the article and substantive, as 6 del xpovot;, eternity, lit. the always time; 6 vw T/joTTo?, the modern fashion; compare the phrase, the then parliament. The substantive may be omitted if it is one which readily suggests itself to the mind, as oi Tots, the (men) of that time; oi vvv, the (men) of the present day1. In the same manner the substantive may be omitted after an attributive genitive, as 6 Kvpov the (son) of Cyrus; rd, Ts 7r6ea? the (affairs) of, i. e. all 1 Strictly speaking, these are examples of the old demonstrative use of the Article, 'they then, ' 'they now.' you are yourself, and whence you are come hither.
