It presents a broad selection of key ancient sources, both visual and literary, about all aspects of performance - including actors, masks, stage props and choral dancing - as well as scenes from the plays themselves that offer insights into their staging, plots, and reception. The dramatic brilliance of playwrights such as Sophocles, Aristophanes and Menander is brought to the fore by helpful commentary that provides a framework for the interpretation of Greek drama, fleshes out its cultural contexts, and invites students to consider a range of provocative questions.

For the study of Greek drama, I've found no better
I was assigned this book for an intensive course on practical ancient theatre done in Greece this summer by a professor whose specialty it is. She has said she will add this to her standard course book list the next time she formally teaches Greek Drama.
The book is very up-to-date, and includes theories of drama that many other scholars on the subject (except perhaps Oliver Taplin and a very few others) ignore. This is very much a book exploring the practical nature of Greek drama, both Comedy and Tragedy (a welcome double inclusion).
There are plenty of excerpts from plays, and pictures of the sites, as well as scholarly illustrations. Not many scholars look at the ancient plays as artistic works meant to be performed, rather than just read. Dugdale manages to look at the works, not only as literary masterpieces of a bygone era, but also as the performance masterpieces they began as and that still have meaning to us today.
