Richard Hough wrote many books on the naval history of both world wars. He had an eminently approachable style yet did not gloss over too many details. In this overview of the naval aspects of WW I he provides an entertaining yet informative view of the strategies followed by the British and German navies, the principal antagonists; there is not much about the Italian or Austro-Hungarian naval conflicts (admittedly mostly small-scale). While not heavily annotated or documented this is not just a re-hash of previously published information, and although I have read many works covering this naval war there was information and analysis here that was still new to me. For someone not very familiar with the events of WW I at sea, this would be a great first source to learn about them; for a reader already well-versed in this history Hough still provides some value.
