The eight chapters deal with as many heroic leaders from the thirteenth to twentieth centuries. The stories are told very dramatically, beginning with Dante, the exile for his convictions, and ending with Ruskin, broken in health and scoffed at for his championship of the common people. Among the other great figures, Dr. Hillis portrays are Savonarola, William the Silent, Cromwell, Milton, Wesley, and Garibaldi.
