As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Though games such as Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future also revolved around the concept of a soundtrack-as-radio station, GTA: Vice City's soundtrack is the most ambitious -- and impressive -- realization of this idea yet, offering DJs with distinctive personalities, tailored track listings, and realistic bumpers, voice-overs, and commercials. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 7: Radio Espantoso presents DJ Pepe, a Cuban-wannabe sports broadcaster who plays an authentic set of Latin and Latin jazz. The volume's standout tracks include Deodato's "Super Strut," Mongo Santamaria's "Mama Papa Tu," Tito Puente's "Mambo Gozon," and Irakere's "Aguanile," while pieces by artists like Unresta, Beny Moré, and Lonnie Liston Smith add to the collection's authenticity. As with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 1: V Rock and Grand Theft Auto Vice City: Vol. 5: Wildstyle, this volume is so well chosen that it could hold its own with "serious" collections of Latin jazz. The commercials for "Fernando's Medallion," jewelry by DJ Fernando Martinez of Emotion 98.3, and "Think Your Way to Success," a dubiously helpful self-help program, help blur the lines between fantasy and reality. For GTA addicts, there's an added incentive to buy the soundtracks: Each disc comes with bonus multimedia content (Windows and Mac compatible), including wallpaper, screenshots, a screensaver, a movie clip, and most importantly, a special cheat code unique to each volume of the soundtrack. Appropriately enough, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 7: Radio Espantoso's cheat code unlocks the Sunny Weather Cheat, which provides the perfect atmosphere for listening to the collection's summery music. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
