The third season of Gomer Pyle, USMC didn't feature as many changes as the transition between the first and second seasons (in which the series moved from black-and-white to color). The season's opening episode, however, did set up one continuing character in the guise of Lou Ann Poovie (Elizabeth MacRae), the would-be singer who become the recurring love-interest for Gomer (Jim Nabors). Sergeant Vince Carter (Frank Sutton) is still Gomer's platoon sergeant, and PFC Duke Slater (Ronnie Schell) is still his best friend. Gomer's good nature keeps getting him into (and out of) trouble in dealing with the world, whether it is helping the sergeant gets the goods on a crooked card-player preying on servicemen, or keeping the rambunctious teenaged daughter of his commanding officer out of trouble at a "beatnik" hangout (where one of the beatniks is played by a pre-All In The Family Rob Reiner). Other recurring character include Private Lester Hummel (William Christopher), Bunny Wilson (or, as Gomer always calls her, Miss Bunny) (Barbara Stuart), Carter's girlfriend; Corporal Chuck Boyle (Roy Stuart); Sergeant Charlie Hacker (Allan Melvin), Carter's professional rival; and Forrest Compton as the base commander, Colonel Edward Gray. There are also some entertaining cameos in this season, such as series creator Aaron Ruben playing a walk-on as the irate record producer on whom Carter tries to foist an untalented singer. The episode plots vary from human interest to pure comedy, of which the funniest is probably "Go Blow Your Horn", in which Carter tries to get Gomer transferred to the Marine band -- the problem is that the only opening is for a tuba player, and Carter's insistence that Gomer practice as much as possible drives everyone on the base to distraction. "Gomer The Card Shark" is also very amusing, as is "One Of Our Shells Is Missing", about a misplaced mortar shell; and "Sue The Pants Off 'Em" is also well done, though it seems to owe its plot to at least one prior episode of The Andy Griffith Show (whence Gomer Pyle, USMC originated), entitled "Otis Sues The County" (with Jay Novello appearing in both episodes). One episode, however, has not worn as well as it should have -- "Gomer The Recruiter", about the Marine signing up enlistees at a streetcorner recruiting station, did not offer much humor amid the burgeoning reality of the Vietnam War.
