Seller's Description:
Very good in Very good jacket. 256 pages. Index. Oversized book, measuring 12 inches by 9-1/4 inches. The book contains more than 400 unforgettable photographs (23 full color, 391 b/w) and statistical charts. Foreword by Red Barber. Page after page evokes the memorable moments and stars of baseball's most exciting years. This book brings together the changing, maturing 50 years--from 1919 to 1969--that led to baseball today. The golden years of baseball were a time of innovations and extraordinary achievements. The 1920s featured teams filled with talent, such as the 1926 Cardinals and the 1927 Yankees, and a new style of play ushered in by the Babe Ruth. Fans loved the excitement, and poured into the ballparks. Attendance plummeted in the depression-ridden 1930s, but baseball provided much-needed thrills with the antics of the Cardinals' colorful Gas House Gang, Gabby Hartnett's "homer in the the gloamin', " and the performances of Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg, and numerous others. The 1940's will be remembered for the greatest season ever (1941), when Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 consecutive games and Ted Williams batted.405, as well as for Jackie Robinson's debut, and the first two pennant playoffs. Perhaps the most exciting decade in baseball, the 1950s gave baseball such fan favorites as Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Duke Snider, as well as such great moments as Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world, " Willie Mays's 1954 World Series circus catch, the first world championship for the "Boys of Summer" Dodgers, and Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Jim Kaplan earned a B.A. in history from Yale and an M.A. in journalism from Northwestern before spending three years as a sportswriter and book reviewer for the Minneapolis Star. He was a Sports Illustrated baseball writer for 16 years and has written 14 books on the game. George Will called him the "poet laureate" of fielding. Walter Lanier "Red" Barber (February 17, 1908-October 22, 1992) was an American sports announcer. Barber, nicknamed "The Ol' Redhead", was primarily identified with broadcasts of Major League Baseball, calling play-by-play across four decades with the Cincinnati Reds (1934-1938), Brooklyn Dodgers (1939-1953), and New York Yankees (1954-1966). Like his fellow sportscasting pioneer Mel Allen, Barber also gained a niche calling college and professional American football in his primary market of New York City. Vintage photographs detail the history of baseball from 1919 to 1969, including the leading teams and players, memorable moments on and off the field, and life in the segregated Negro leagues.
