A talented sensual writer. However, many times I find the same dialog in most of her books, but with this book it works. Ms. Johnson sceneries and settings are usually well written when writing about the Russian and the Gypsies. The book's opening scene is in Turkey 1877. How this book sets apart her other historical books is the play between the Russian general Prince Stefan Bariantinsky and the bookish Countess Lisaveta Lazaroff. The female character is strong but it is Stefan's character who rose in the midst of war to become the hero that he should be. I actually enjoyed the whole story- the entire book this time.
