And the purpose of the Lord was fulfilled in the following way. There was at the court of Solomon a man named Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, whom Solomon had promoted to great honour. A prophet named Ahijah met this Jeroboam, and rent his garment into twelve pieces, to represent the twelve tribes of Israel. He gave Jeroboam ten pieces, as a token that the Lord would rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon's son, and give ten tribes to Jeroboam, as a punishment for the sin and disobedience of which Solomon had been guilty in his old age. Solomon sought to slay Jeroboam; but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, where he remained until Solomon's death. After Solomon had. reigned for forty years in Israel, he died, and was buried in the city of David. Rehoboam his son succeeded him. But this Rehoboam was a tyrannical man, and when the people begged him to make their service lighter, he replied that it should be far heavier than it had been under Solomon. Angry at this, a great many people went over to Jeroboam; and thus from this time we have two kingdoms of the children of Israel--the kingdom of Judah, consisting of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, who remained faithful to Rehoboam;.and the kingdom of Israel, consisting of the ten tribes who followed Jeroboam. But both Israel and Judah sinned; and both were punished, as you shall read presently.
