Seller's Description:
Unamed. Good Only. A two volume set of works written by George Griffith, offering a series of autobiographical records and sketches from the Midlands. Complete in two volumes. Scarce to find a complete set of works. Previous owner's 'Roy & Nina Merley' bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbrid eating a worm in the foreground. This interesting work of history, offers an insight into the educational systems of the midland in the late 19th century. Illustrated with 34 wood engravings. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally worn, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine resulting in a small amount of loss. Heavy fading to the spine of volume II, with additional patches of rubbing to the boards and extremities. Previous owners bookplates to the front pastedown of each volume. Light rubbing marks to the front and rear endpapers. The front hinge of volume I is strained. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light handling marks to the first few pages of volume II. Good Only.
