Strong performances on ordinary material make the reissue a worthwhile but not indispensable package. Cannonball Adderley's spirited flights on alto sax are the main point of interest on Chambers' Go..., a 1959 set of three Chambers originals and three standards. The drummers, Davis associates Philly Joe Jones (track one) and Jimmy Cobb (tracks two to six), are also outstanding. The young Freddie Hubbard, heard on four tracks, sounds derivative and unformed compared to his later prowess. The trumpeter's energetic choruses on "I Got Rhythm" are the exception to his otherwise characterless appearance here. Chambers and Kelly are solid throughout, although Chambers' solos spots -- of which there are one or two too many -- are a bit muffled. Kelly at Midnite is a trio date from 1960 that benefits immensely from the close affinity Kelly and Chambers had forged between themselves in the Davis quintet. Jones, outstanding again, is the drummer. The performances don't burn with the brilliance of the Davis group, but they do have a cohesive, swinging attitude that can be credited to the intuitive awareness and understanding the players have for one another. ~ Jim Todd, Rovi
