According to Arizona folklore, "Globe City" was named for an extremely large globe-shaped silver nugget found along Pinal Creek in the 1870s. The town site, nestled in the foothills of the Pinal Mountains, was laid out in 1876, and miners and prospectors soon flooded the camp, joining ranchers already in the area.
