I have a degree in history, and am back at college working on a second bachelor's. I had to retake second semester U.S. history because the university won't transfer this particular class from out-of-state schools. Boy, if any of my other history textbooks had been this dull, I'd never have majored in the subject. Most chapters in this book are filled with endless sound bites from politicians. There's no real feel for life in the past, and I can't see how anyone can really feel like they learned much. I will say the chapters on the Reconstruction and the Depression were better than the others (how shocking that a book published in the U.S. dares to point out that the New Deal didn't help the U.S. economy). Still, this book gives you the impression that Americans always have been and always will be mindless lumps of clay just waiting to be enthralled by the latest blowhard the media decides to put forward. To really learn history, you have to be able to relate to the people who went through these events. Sadly, this book does nothing to help the student in that regard.
