An imprint of World Wisdom, the Wisdom Tales Press publishes children's books on spiritual themes. The books are highly ecumenical and include American Indian religion, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Jainism, traditional animal fables, and many others. An underlying theme of the series is that people and cultures approach the Transcendent in many ways. Wisdom Tales has kindly sent me books for review over the past few years, including this book. I have learned from them in their own right.
The most recent Wisdom Tales book, "Gifts of our Lady of Guadalupe: Patroness of Latin America" has an obviously Catholic theme. Written for children between the ages of 7 -- 10, the book is a retelling of the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1531 to a young Aztec farmer, Juan Diego, who was among the first to convert to Christianity. The apparition led the initially skeptical Bishop Juan de Zumarraga to build a large church on the hill where the Lady appeared. Today, the church is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world with over 20 million visitors every year.
The book is written and illustrated by the noted children's author, Demi, who studied in Mexico when she was young. Demi has written and illustrated many children's books, including several for Wisdom Tales. The late Barbara Bush selected one of Demi's books for her program, Mrs. Bush's story time". Demi is best-know for her books on religious figures from various traditions, including the Dalai Lama, Mahavira, the Buddha, Krishna, Muhammad, Confucius, Lao Tzu, and others, including the Virgin Mary in this book.
The book has a simple, clear text, but its main attraction is the beautiful color illustrations. The pictures are radiant and bright and capture the beauty of the apparition, the miraculous hill of red roses, and the mystery and sanctity of the event. The book is a lovely retelling for children of the story of the Lady of Guadalupe. The book includes two pages of factual information about the Lady in addition to the story.
Parents will want to use this book differently depending on their own beliefs. Catholic readers may explain to children how the book fits within their tradition. Readers from other faith traditions who want to use this book with their children will want to take a different approach probably emphasizing the many different approaches to God and religion and how this particular story illustrates faith and trust in the Divine.
I think it valuable for children to be exposed to religious stories from various traditions to give them some sense early in life of the mystery of faith and meaning. This book and other books from Wisdom Tales are outstanding ways to meet this goal.
