Helped me remember my Dad and his peers. Introduced me to a poet in a manner that will never allow me to forget him, his poetry, and his potential. I will recognize their contribution, and loss daily.
Author's insights were epic. Very much appreciated.
Excellent companion to this book would be one dealing with Japanese perspective.

Great Book!!
I'm a senior history major who just went through historiography class, so i've become rather skeptical about history books. This one however is excellent!! It is very balanced, giving credit where it is due and showing both sides of the story without bias. It can get very graphic but the author does a fabulous job of accurately portraying life in the camps or on the Death March. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down while I was reading it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history, or even just a good story.

An epic story of true war heroes
If like me, you were born in the sixties or later, you might have heard of the "Bataan Death March" -- often used in joking reference to a long hike or some such nonsense. I really never stopped to wonder the source of that reference, nor what it meant in our history.
Bataan is part of the Philippines, and the march is part of the story here about the imprisonment, treatment and escape of prisoners of war in WWII. Hampton Sides tells a compelling story of the WWII prisoners, their escape and the true heroism involved.
I'm not much for military history, but this story is so riveting I think even an ardent pacifist would devour the story. It's a remarkable story, told in eye-popping detail, that will have you racing through the book. I can't recommend it highly enough.
