Modernen Vertretern der Gesellschaftskritik wie Ridley Scott oder George Orwell, die den Menschen im Zuge der andauernd fortschreitenden Technisierung immer weiter zum Automaten verkommen sehen, steht bereits in der Romantik E.T.A. Hoffmanns, Der Sandmann" gegen???ber, das noch immer f???r eine gro???e Zahl an Diskussionen in der Literaturwissenschaft sorgt. Die anhaltenden Kontroversen sind vor allem darauf zur???ckzuf???hren, dass Hoffmann keine eindeutige Interpretation zul???sst: Er erz???hlt multiperspektivisch und l???sst seinen Leser im Unklaren dar???ber, wo sich in seinem Werk die Grenzen zwischen Traum und Realit???t befinden und welche Perspektiven als objektiv betrachtet werden d???rfen. Schon mit den drei Briefen, die als Einleitung in die Geschichte dienen, werden dem Leser die subjektiven Ansichten der Protagonisten Clara und Nathanael f???rmlich aufgedr???ngt, und auch durch den Erz???hler bietet sich im weiteren Verlauf der Erz???hlung kein klareres Bild. Eine Vielzahl der Debatten zum, Sandmann" besch???ftigt sich mit dem Automatenmotiv, das durch die Figur der Olimpia vertreten wird. Mit den Automaten ???bt Hoffmann nicht allein eine Kritik an der philistr???sen Gesellschaft aus. Vielmehr ist diese Kritik in einen gr??????eren Rahmen einzuordnen, in dem Olimpia als Extrem kleinb???rgerlicher Allt???glichkeit Nathanael als Extrem fr???hromantischer Ideale gegen???bersteht. Beide f???hren zu einem nicht l???sbaren Perspektivenkonflikt, den ich in dieser Hausarbeit neben der Frage, worin die Faszination von Automaten allgemein und speziell in der Epoche der Romantik liegt, n???her darstellen und teilweise aufl???sen m???chte.
