In dem Streben nach einer uber alles erhabene'n Sch???nheit sucht die K???nstlerhand des Griechen diese nicht in dem Gegebenen, Charakteristischen der Pers???nlichkeit, sondern selbstsch???pierisch verleiht sie dieser eine typische Gestaltung, durch die sie eine g???ttliche Weihe erh???lt. Denn damals war eben nichts heilig als das Sch???ne. Das G???ttliche spiegelte sich im Menschlichen wieder, und die Grenzen zwischen Beiden hatten sich bald verwischt. Hier verfolgen wir eine in ihrem Wesen stets sich gleich bleibende Entwicklung der Darstellungsweisen, angefangen von der Grabstele des Dermys und Kitylos, in der sich zwei sehnige, schlanke j???nglinge liebend umschlungen halten, bis zu jenem herrlichen Grabstein der Hegeso, in dem die jugendlich-sch???ne Gestalt der auf einem Sessel thronenden Verstorbenen mit schmerzlich-liebendem Blick die Perlenschn???re, die ihr eine trauernde M???dchengestalt in dem Schmuck k???stchen darreicht, noch einmal spielend durch die feinen H???nde gleiten l???sst. Es ist die Trauer um den Verlust des Sch???nen, die, im Grabmal ausgedr???ckt, wohl gleichzeitig auch _den Beschauer bef???llt.
