A bit dry and "sloggy" in parts, Bradford's biography of George VI is nevertheless complete and factually accurate. It provides a significant overview of his life and times without resorting to innuendo or surmise. One comes away with a factual sense of the man, but the book does not paint an intimate or personal portrait. An interesting compliment, and more intriguing and readable biography, is that of his wife, Elizabeth (Bowes Lyon), by William Shawcross entitled "The Queen Mother: The Official Biography." Queen Elizabeth's voice and letters provide a keener look into King George VI's thoughts, habits, attitudes and personality. Shawcross' work offers a more subtle understanding of the relationships, experiences, strengths and difficulties that defined her husband's life and reign.
