Excerpt from Geology Its Past and Present; Being a Lecture Delivered to the Members of the Glasgow Athenaeum, January 13, 1859 It may well seem strange that in Astronomy - a science which deals with bodies so immensely distant from us, that most of them are seen only as specks of light - by far the most important part of all that we now know, was known more than a century and a half ago whereas it is only, as it were, in the present day that we have come to asoer tain the most elementary truths in respect to the history and structure of our own planet. There are, however, considerations which may account for this difference be tween the two departments of knowledge. It has arisen partly from the difference of inducement to inquire into the one, as compared with the inducement to inquire into the other; and partly to the difference in the methods of investigation which the two sciences severally require. As regards inducement - Objects distant and obscure ex cite our wonder far more than objects near and familiar and wonder is the mother of all inquiry. So also, objects which are in motion, all the more if the cause of that motion be invisible, will at once arrest the attention.
