First edition. 8vo. xii, 211 pp. Frontispiece portrait from a painting of Ashby in military dress astride his horse. Ashby (1828-1862), a planter in northern Virginia untrained in military matters, quickly showed his mettle in the early months of the war, and by late winter 1862 commanded all of the cavalry serving Stonewall Jackson, keying his victories in the Shenandoah Valley that spring. He was killed in a rear guard action in early June. Bookplate of Virginia historian Jennings Wise and his wife Elizabeth. Dornbusch II, 2587. Not in Nevins or Nicholson. Very good copy with a nice association. Original gilt-stamped maroon cloth. (9945).
