Paul6, b February 19, 1895. 155 JOHN6 PEIGHTEL, son of 32 Sarah4 (Garner) Peightel and Henry Peightel, was born November 14, 1839. This was the only son who grew to manhood. He was reared on the parental home farm near McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was a young man of sterling qualities, and became quite a help to his father in operating the farm. In the winter season he attended the public school after the free school system became operative. The school term at that period was limited to three months. It was difficult to secure good teachers. Notwithstanding the many disadvantages the pupils had in those days, the subject of this sketch made satisfactory progress, and at the termination of his school days he had a fair business education. December 4, 1862, Mr. Peightel married (1) Margaret Earner, born August 27, 1840, of the same county. After marriage he continued to work on his home farm until in the early spring of 1865, when he enlisted to serve in the United States army. He was assigned to Co. K, 78th Reg. Pa. Vol. Inf. In September the same year, he was honorably mustered out of service. Returning home to his family he again engaged in farming. His wife died May 2, 1875, aged 34 years, 8 months and 5 days. September 20, 1877, married (2) Margaret Bauer Greaser, born August 30, 1846; daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Bauer) Greaser, who also died January 13, 1883, aged 36 years, 4 months and 13 days.
