This book of essays explores the possibilities of that spirit--suggesting ways in which gay people might find a place and purpose in human culture.

I bought this book primarily because of the Richard Harris (aka. Hibiscus of the Cockettes fame) interview and the photographs. I read the whole book, hopping between chapters back and forth, always finding more and more to spark my interests. Mark Thompson has done a fine job in including writings from people with very varying views on what being gay means and how it comes through in the lives of people from artists to activists, writers to poets. The book features essays and interviews by people like William S. Burroughs, Judy Grahn and Tobias Schneebaum. From what I've gathered this book is still widely in use at universities as research material and indeed, very little if anything in this book is out dated in anyway despite having been written 20 years ago. The photographs also deserve a special mention : there's plenty and thus most chapters come alive also in pictures. There's Walt Whitman, Edward Carpenter, Gerald Heard, Harry Hay, John Burnside, Radical Fairies, James Broughton, Christopher Isherwood with partner Don Bachardy, Jose Sarria, The Angels of Light, The Cockettes, George Harris and Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
