Exhausts close on center or slightly after center, hence in the latter case inlets open still later. Inlet Opens. Engine. About 50 after centre, large slow-speed engines, 100-250 R.P.M. "30" " medium-or slow-speed small engines. "6" " small high-speed engines, 500-800 R.P.M. Suction should continue till after center has been passed, especially in high-speed engines where the gas has considerable inertia. Inlet Closes. Engine. About io0 for large slow-speed engines. "40 for medium or slow-speed small engines. ' 150 for small high-speed engines. To secure a retardation equal at both ends and still retain the form of the roller center-line curve the same in form as the piston velocity curve for constant admission velocity, it might seem at first glance feasible to retard the whole cam, as in Fig. 135, the full line showing the original position and the dotted line the retarded position. A glance will show that the valve-lifts will not now be proportional to the piston speed, but on the rise opening will be smaller, while on the fall larger, than before retardation at the same crank-angles. It is more.important that the end of the curve give full opening with a decrease in gas velocity, perhaps, than that the rise of the curve be exact.
