I read this book over the Christmas break. I really couldn't put it down. Portland OR, where I live, was hit by a bad snow storm a few days before Christmas. After having my flight home to Louisiana canceled but managing to find a train out of here, I was happy to have this book to fill my time during a very long train trip to Sacramento, CA so I could catch a new flight home for Christmas. This was such a good book, I gave my copy to my beloved nephew so he could enjoy the book as much as I did. I'm now reading the second book, Deadhouse Gates, in the series.

gardens of the moon
A must read for any fantasy fan. The attention to detail is amazing, Steven Erikson has invented not just a story around a few characters but a whole collection of worlds, races and beliefs. He has thrown in some magic and lots of action. There is a hint of romance for those that look for it and there are many lessons to be learnt if you read between the lines about the ways we think and act in the "real world" I have gone on to read the first 6 books in this series and have loved them all as much as the first. N.B. Anyone who enjoyed People of the Lakes by Kathleen O'Neil Gear and Michael Gear will love the Malazan books of the fallen.... want to know about the story.... sorry you'll have to read it and you're mad if you don't. Happy reading all.

Gardens of the Moon is an Epic Feast of Words
Gardens of the Moon is the first in a series of books by the wonderful Canadian author Steven Erikson. Epic comes to mind readily when reading this book. There are other authors who write epic multi-volume fantasy but Erikson is a diamond among coal. Other authors have the potential but Erikson shows is. I could easily compare Erikson with other well known authors. But I believe the Malazan books stand alone. I first heard of Erikson from some posters across the pond who've had access to his works for many years. I was going to jump the gun and buy his stuff from amazon.uk but when the announcement came that his books would be printed in the states I was ecstatic. Gardens of the Moon is an Epic Feast of Words. His scope is so grand and time spanning that it sucks you into his stories. There is so much going on in his books that to re-read them is a good thing. On a once through you get the gist of what's going on but on subsequent reads you find out stuff you missed the first time through. That's one of the criteria I have is the re-readability of a book. If I can't re-read it, it doesn't stay on my shelf very long. Erikson's world has been compared to other authors which have themes of war, brutality, and the general worst of man. Gardens of the Moon has it in spades but there is also so much of love and redemption and camaraderie that gives you someone to cheer for, which I feel is lacking in some modern fantasy. Don't get me wrong, these books are very adult and any parent would be advised to either read it before hand or only let older children to read it. Gardens of the Moon introduces a company of men and women known as the Bridgeburners. Lead by a man named Whiskeyjack and including such luminaries as Quick Ben and Cpl. Kalam, the Brigeburners get followed through their betrayal at the taking of a city to the end of the book at a city the Malazan Empire is trying to conquer. Erikson give great insight through the eyes of his characters. From the veteran soldier to the commoner on the street to the awesomely powerful Tiste Andii. Erikson has races that are unique and new for me, like the aforementioned Tiste Andii and the Jaghut. In short, if you like military fantasy with powerful sorcery and epic worlds this book is for you. After reading a chapter you'll just sit there and ponder on everything you read until you read the next chapter. Get it, read it, enjoy it.
