Leitner has introduced yet another form of the Lalande cell. The chief difference lies in the mode of the formation of the copper oxide block, which serves at once as the conductor and the depolarizer. We will let the inventor speak for himself: --"The 'Cupron-Element' is the outcome of years of research, commencing with the copper oxide element of Lalande and Chaperon, which was already in use in 1884. Several inventors, including Edison, have devoted their attention from time to time to improvements on the Lalande and Chaperon Element, partly from the point of view of a cheap and convenient source of electricity and partly as a 'reversible combination' or an accumulator. These attempts have been mostly unsuccessful, especially with regard to the anode of the element, i.e. the copper oxide plate. This difficulty has however been overcome at last, mainly in consequence of a method of manufacture which produces a coherent and, at the same time, highly porous copper oxide plate, which, in its present state of perfection, can be entirely regenerated after exhaustion by simple exposure to the air; thus, the oxygen of the air furnishes the depolarization, which in most primary batteries is achieved by expensive and corrosive chemicals. "The kathode of this element consists of zinc, which is absolutely unattacked by the electrolyte when the element is not in use. The electrolyte consists of commercial caustic soda.
