Never tied to one particular vein of electronica, unlike fellow Floridians Icey (breaks) and Rabbit in the Moon (costume raver), Q-Burns nevertheless grew into one of the more prominent artists in the electronica boom of the late '90s, releasing three albums on U.S. giant Astralwerks before weathering the post-rave bust on his own Eighth Dimension Records. Two years after releasing an unnecessary collection of other artists remixing his work, (Re-Routed), Michael Donaldson puts the glove on the other hand, offering this collection of remixes he has done for peers Doctorolive, Tetris, Fila Brazillia and several others between 1998 and 2003. And surprisingly, it turns out to be one of the strongest releases of his career. While his original productions have always been scattershot, the main presence on Future Past Tense is groovy house. So whether taming Rabbit in the Moon with a sleazy cowbell or adding a funky dub bassline to Iffy's "Can-O-Cop", the result is always a charming funk which neither goes for the jugular, nor disappears up its own backside. Most energized is Q-Burns' acidic remix of Lovesky, with its incessant jacking snare break while on his mix of Mazi's "Do You Want Me" he fine-tunes Collette's voice to something not a million miles from Björk. The fact that he keeps every mix somewhere in the middle of the scale means that this disc lacks any real surprises. But while the middle may be safe, it can also be sound, which will secure this disc for future listens. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi
