I've read many books that were less good, but on the whole this one fell flat. Obvious plot and twists, uninteresting and barely-two-dimensional characters, a lack of real tension... it's shlock adventure where I was expecting high fantasy. It's all right, I'll probably read a few more in the series.

Butcher at his best
The start of an excellent fantasy saga. Butcher has created a magical world with a twist. Follow Tavi, a 15 year old lad born, raised and living in a magical land where he is the only one without magic. A coming of age saga full of plot twists and turns that leaves you with the urge to pick up and start the second volume at 2AM. Fast paced with the same energy Butcher fans have enjoyed for ages.

NOT JUST ANOTHER DRESDEN FILE
Jim Butcher, famous for his modern day wizard series of books (The Dresden Files) has created in the Furies of Calderon book (and accompanying three additional books) a compelling universe. Magic, coming of age and loyalty are presented in an exciting and unique way, creating a real page turner. I couldn't wait to read the next installment, often staying up half the night to find out what Tavi and his cohorts were up to. Butcher has combined elements of world history and an ancient mythical world in a way that is captivating and breathtaking.
