Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. Size: 4to 11"-13" tall; The publisher says "Rarely in the history of painting have the portrait, the still life, and landscape been represented by a finer more varied succession of artists." "A well written survey of French painting from Jean Fouquet (born c.1420) to Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). Concentrates on important themes and major artists. The art historical development in France is tied to its European context." Bound most handsomely in a tall, thick, heavy, oversized near-folio format, boards being covered in a medium blue cloth, with black, lettering to spine, being sterling of condition of interior, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf-and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Remains of what looks to be coffee stains along bottom tip, nowhere near to affecting text. Bright and shiny dust jacket overall, illustrated, showing only very minor wear beyond crimping to front flap, light edge-wear, protected by a plastic coat, not price-clipped. Translation (presumably from the original French) by James Emmons. Many, many score full-color illustrations, some in-text, but most of them being tipped-in or fully mounted. Another fine contribution to the The History of Modern Painting series, and featuring long sections about and works from landscape painters, realist painters, and members of the Impressionist Revolution. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. [12], 13-229 [2] pp. including a Table of Contents.
