Richard Goodman read an ad in the Journal Francais d'Amerique, and did what most of us would never have the nerve to do. He took a year off, and went to live in paradise. An aloof paradise in the South of France--where the citizens were less forthcoming even than Parisians--where the object of his love was not a woman, but a vegetable garden. French Dirt is for Francophiles--for gardeners and travelers--but, most especially for anybody who longs for a year off in which to pursue his heart's desire.

As spring hesistantly begins in my area of the world, I long for the smell of fresh air and the feel of my hands in the dirt. Reading Richard Goodman?s ?French Dirt? satisfied me when my garden efforts were stymied. An account of an American who eventually gets to know his new neighbors in a small village in France, I think ?French Dirt? is better than the more well-known books by Peter Mayle. It shows a much better appreciation for what it means to try to become "local", whether you're moving to a small town or a different country. Goodman is more patient, more respectful of the French and of small-town folks in general, an attitude that is lacking in too many places these days.
