This novel of Abe Lincoln and the Civil War is backed up with 190pages of sources and commentary. My main interest in Lincoln has been in his youth. But I am finding thisfictional portrayal of his time as President from 1861-1865 as refreshing and well researched. Another good fictional account is that of Gore Vidal, LINCOLN. The film version of Vidal's book was also excellent. It is certainly timely reading about Abraham Lincoln since two of the candidates, Obama and Palin have a paucity of experience. But then so did Harry Truman, despite his 8 years as a judge and 3 years as a US Senator. My favorite postage stamp is that of Lincoln reading to his son. Given that he was self taught it is amazing that he was so efficient with his actions. I recommend this book highly for anyone interested in the Civil War.
