The British author tells the true story of his capture and repeated escapes after his plane was shot down in WWII.
This is not simply an "adventure" book. What makes his book special is its insight into the thinking of a resourceful, daring man. The author tells us what he was planning and thinking: for example, how he was able to outwit the farmers who held him at gunpoint. We appreciate the value of preparing for things to go wrong. I'm inspired to learn lock picking -- you just never know!
The book describes in detail the varied methods he and his comrades used to confuse and evade their German captors. The author is possessed of equal parts of cleverness, courage, and good judgment, a man that young adults can look up to. And my 85-year old mother enjoyed the book, too. A fine, engrossing book for any reader.
