Where the first two volumes mostly covered short pieces that were arranged by Josef von Gahy, a friend of Schubert who sometimes performed with him at evening Schubertiades, and later produced his "unauthorized" transcriptions after the composer's death. In this third volume, the piano duo arrangement of the String Quartet in D minor, "Death and the Maiden," and the complete performing edition of the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, "Unfinished," make up the whole program. The former was arranged by Robert Franz, while the latter is a transcription by Anton Hüttenbrenner (movements I and II), Anthony Goldstone (Scherzo), and Friedrich Hermann and Goldstone (the Finale, for which the Entr'acte from Rosamunde has been adapted).
