A welcome reissue of this wartime classic from the author of Birdy. During WW II, a dying American soldier, William Wiley, and his German captor, Wilhelm Klug, are miraculously rescued by a fox endowed with extraordinary powers, Franky Furbo. For William, the experience is indisputably true but when he discovers later that neither his wife nor children believe in Franky, he endures a crisis of faith and searches desperately for the truth. Franky Furbo is a modern fable with a remarkable twist, quite unlike anything Wharton wrote before or since.

Seller's Description:
Very Good. First edition. Trade paperback. Lightly illustrated by the author. Bottom textblock corner slightly soiled, corners rubbed, spine ends bumped, very good. A novel.
This marvelous tale can be appreciated on many levels, and is as enchanting to a 50-year old as to a 5-year old. The story about Franky Furbo (a mutant super-intelligent fox) and his adventures as he discovers and learns to use his abilities. Themes of loss and redemption, love and caring, genetics and civilizations are woven through a strong story line that culminates with Franky finding out the astonishing truth about who he is. A delicious read.

out of print ~worth the read
william wharton ( author of "birdy", "dad" , "a midnight clear"~and i mention those only cuz they were made into movies so you may have a frame of reference) this book represents a consolidation of bedtime stories wharton told his kids. the great thing is it's a story just as intriguing for adults. i found my first copy in a bin of $.50 paperbacks and then consistently tracked down used copies in manhattan and made them gifts for friends. my husband gave me a signed first edition for a b'day present and i could not have cried more. it's fantasy/science fiction/brother's grimm/ family loyalty and world war II. if you have an affinity for animals ( and are sympathetic to the anthropomorphic take on things), this is for you. william wharton ( a pen name ) lives in france and has written several other amazing books that unfortunately are also hard to come by: "scumbler", "last lovers", "houseboat on the siene", "ever after", "pride", "tidings". all are worth the effort to find and read and pass on.
