Personally, I'm a fan of the eyewitness series - I carried this around France rather than Fodor's or Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet definitely has better budget options - most, most definitely! But it's thicker and bulkier than Eyewitness, although they might weigh in the same...I like the glossy paper here but it's heavy. What I like about Eyewitness are the pictures (can't lie) and the succinct descriptions and lists of museums. I'm a museum addict, so I guess those are the most valuable to me. Also the train-station symbols...in France, at least, I don't need detailed how-to-get-around instructions (you won't find them here) but if there's a gare, I know I can get there. Given the lack of a lot of information I'm hard pressed to say why I like this one so much! I guess it's written in a style that appeals to me (not entirely dry but not hah-hah trying to be funny either), it's got the pictures, it's easy to reference cities without searching the index. For countries I'm not familiar with I usually give the Eyewitness a once-over to pick out my destinations and then turn to Lonely Planet for places to stay, transport info etc.
