One of President Calvin Coolidge's strengths was that he was an excellent writer and a national essay award winner while in college at Amherst. As President of the Massachusetts State Senate, as Governor of Massachusetts and most importantly as President of the United States, he used his writing ability to organize his thoughts and present complex issues to the public in an orderly way. He also brought a very disciplined, scientific and methodical approach to his job as leader of the executive branch of the Federal Government and of the Massachusetts State Government.
The following quotes are from this book and are quotes which I consider to be quintessentially Coolidge:
"No other theory is adequate to explain or comprehend the Declaration of Independence. It is the product of the spiritual insight of the people. We live in an age of science and of abounding accumulation of material things. These did not create our Declaration. Our Declaration created them. The things of the spirit come first. Unless we cling to that, all our material prosperity, overwhelming though it may appear, will turn to a barren sceptre in our grasp. If we are to maintain the great heritage which has been bequeathed to us, we must be like-minded as the fathers who created it. We must not sink into a pagan materialism. We must cultivate the reverence which they had for the things that are holy. We must follow the spiritual and moral leadership which they showed. We must keep replenished, that they may glow with a more compelling flame, the altar fires before which they worshiped."
"We must have no carelessness in our dealings with public property or the expenditure of public money. Such a condition is characteristic of either an undeveloped people, or of a decadent civilization. America is neither. It stands out strong and vigorous and mature. We must have an administration which is marked, not by the inexperience of youth or the futility of age, but by the character and ability of maturity. We have had the self-control to put into effect the Budget system, to live under it and in accordance with it. It is an accomplishment in the art of self-government of the very highest importance. It means that the American Government is not a spendthrift, and that it is not lacking in the force or disposition to organize and administer its finances in a scientific way. To maintain this condition puts us constantly on trial. It requires us to demonstrate whether we are weaklings, or whether we have strength and character. It is not too much to say that it is a measure of the power and integrity of the civilization which we represent."

The spirit of real constructive economy is something higher and nobler. It does not imply so much a limitation as an attempt to be free from limitation. It is an attempt to increase and enlarge the scope of the individual and the life of the nation."

Calvin Coolidge will talk to you as a father would talk to a son or daughter, he will always tell you the truth, and he will never let you down.
If you can, I would strongly recommend that readers obtain a copy of the hard copy book "Have Faith in Massachusetts," by then Governor Calvin Coolidge. I suggest you read the speech in that book by that same name. I read it 5 times to start out and I now read it monthly for inspiration. It is an absolutely beautiful speech.
