The concept behind Forever Mod: A Tribute to Rod Stewart actually makes sense: cover versions of Stewart-performed classics, concentrating mostly (but not exclusively) on his critically adored early years, both solo and with the Faces. The artist selection, however, is rather odd: Most of the performers were associated with mainstream '80s metal or one of the AOR bands indirectly influenced by that much-maligned style. That isn't bad in every case -- some of the singers and musicians do their best to recreate the loose, informal feel of prime Stewart, and the bluesier hard rockers actually fare pretty well, much better than you might expect. However, there are also some self-conscious, extremely mannered performances that transform the songs into rather generic hard rock, and these are where the ragged charm of the originals is sorely missed.
