Trumpeter Bruce Gates' big band features excellent musicians from the Washington, D.C., area performing straight-ahead jazz arrangements. The soloists (tenor saxophonist Saul Millier, trombonist Rick Lilard, pianist Wade Beach, guitarist Rick Whitehead, and altoist Andy Axelrad, among others) are fine, the repertoire mixes together standards with some lesser-known selections (including Jimmy Smith's "Off the Top" and Pete Christlieb's "Hookin' It"), and the band swings.
