(Disclaimer: I know William Whit.) Bill Whit has written a convenient and accessible primer on food and society. The book is a series of short, self contained pieces in topic areas examing nutrition, the food industry, hunger, technology, obesity, etc. Whit uses food as a prism for examing the world cultures. This book came out in 1995 so could use an updating (Bill, if you are reading this, maybe you could use your retirement leisure to put out an update!) but is well written and provides accounts that are useful in academia, but are accessible to the average reader.
