More than that, he captured the enthusiasm of the New York Youth Symphony players, who range in age from 12 to 22. The program consists entirely of works by African American composers. Two are by Florence Beatrice Price, who seems to have emerged at the top of the heap; the orchestral work Ethiopia's Shadow in America and the Piano Concerto in One Movement have each been recorded once before this release, and the works by Valerie Coleman and Jessie Montgomery receive their world premieres here. The music as a whole has an indefinable feeling of holding together. The most attractive quality of Price's music is not that it uses African American idioms -- it does so sparingly -- but that it sets those into dialogue with other styles. One can imagine...
