Splendid 21-track compilation of the trio's finest work from 1970-1977 on the Dawn and Pye labels in close, vivid sound. The selection of songs is derived from all four of their Dawn label albums but also encompasses their non-LP single of George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" (which incorporates " "Good Day Sunshine") and a previously unissued version of "Goin' Back." The range of sounds on this CD will surprise even those listeners who have heard a portion of the group's work -- "Old Sam," off of their third album, bears a striking resemblance to Paul Simon's music (most specifically "An American Tune"), where "Johnson Boy" shows them paralleling elements of the Eagles' sound, with some neat and unexpected slide guitar present as well. The annotation is also very thorough, and reflects the care taken with this long-overdue compilation. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
