Flight of the Conchords, the self-proclaimed "fourth most popular folk parody duo" in New Zealand, soar to rarefied heights with a unique brand of comedy and music in their inaugural season. The series charts the low-key Kiwi invasion of New York City by Bret (Bret McKenzie) and Jemaine (Jemaine Clement), a good-natured but naive pair of shepherds-turned-troubadours who seek to kick-start their careers in the U.S. while keeping a vigilant lookout for romance. Their small but entertaining social circle consists of the group's clueless manager, Murray (Rhys Darby), who also happens to work at the New Zealand Consulate; Mel (Kristen Schaal), a borderline stalker who accounts for the band's sole fan base; Murray's assistant, Greg (Frank Wood); Mel's husband, Doug (David Costabile); and Dave (Arj Barker), a pawn-shop employee who considers himself the go-to guy when the guys need relationship and cultural advice. In addition to the band's (mostly) fruitless search for paying gigs, much of the action is driven by Bret and Jemaine's luck-or lack thereof-with women, including Jemaine's pursuit of Sally (Rachel Blanchard), which inspires the songs "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" and "Business Time," and Bret's courtship of Coco (Sutton Foster), who's on the receiving end of the comically erotic "If You're Into It." Among other memorable tunes are "Pencils in the Wind," "Inner City Pressure" and "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros." Guest stars for Season 1 include John Hodgman, Demetri Martin, and Will Forte. Flight of the Conchords is a fold parody band from New Zealand. Their show takes place in New York however and is a mix between their music and their quirky style of comedy. There is very little physical humor, and much of the laughs are drawn from subtle jokes and their ridiculous songs.
