Through a wide-ranging discussion, that extends from Ovid and Leonardo da Vinci to Gerhard Richter, and from philosophy and literature to time-based art, Kaja Silverman shows that the master myth of Western subjectivity is the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, not that of Oedipus, and this Janus-faced myth has the capacity both to destroy and to save us.

Super! I've read it three times. Helps me to see with new eyes, hear with new ears. Nuanced and humane, the book opened new worlds of art, philosophy, and literature for me. The notes were often as engrossing as the text. Amidst all her erudition and focus on human suffering and evil, Silverman maintains a light touch, never losing her sense of perspective or taking herself too seriously. A book that deals with the question of death and cruelty in a beautiful and redemptive way. Silverman's distinction between analogy and metaphor is typical of her approach to her material. Freud, Rilke, Nietzsche, Salome, Rolland, Leonardo, Richter, and more, all seen with new eyes.
