Voller Bewunderung betrachtete der italienische Humanist und Kunstfreund Cyriacus d'Ancona im Jahre 1449 ein Bild des niederländischen Malers Rogier van der Weyden. Hier, so schrieb er staunend, sieht man "Gesichter, die zu atmen scheinen, während tote Körper wie echte Leichen aussehen". Aus der Distanz von mehr als 500 Jahren ist die überwältigende Wirkung dieses "Triumphs der Wirklichkeit" in der abendländischen Malerei, wie Dirk de Vos sie in seinem einführenden Essay beschreibt, oft nur schwer nachzuvollziehen, so sehr haben wir uns an den Realismus von Foto, Film und Fernsehen gewöhnt. Oft fehlt auch die Zeit und die Gelegenheit, sich in die Betrachtung eines solchen Meisterwerkes eingehender zu versenken, um die einstmals als revolutionär erachtete sinnliche Erfassung des Wirklichen in gemalten Bildern in ihrer ganzen Intensität zu erleben. Diese Erfassung liegt oftmals im Detail, den kleinen, banalen Dingen, aus denen sich die alltägliche Erfahrung zusammen setzt, die aber leicht übersehen werden. In den Bildern der flämischen Meister werden sie nicht nur mit Sorgfalt sichtbar gemacht, oft dienen sie dazu, den realistischen Gehalt des Bildes mit dessen Symbolik zu verbinden. Hier liegt eine der Stärken des von de Vos zusammen gestellten und zugleich kenntnisreich und einfühlsam kommentierten Bildbandes. 20 Hauptwerke dieser so entscheidenden Epoche in der Kunst werden in chronologischer Folge und in zahlreichen, bestechenden Details vorgestellt und besprochen. Von den Flémaller Tafeln Robert Campins über van Eycks und van der Weydens Altarbilder und Porträts bis hin zu Triptychons von Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes und Hans Memling ersteht so in Einzelbeispielen aus unterschiedlichen Genres eine repräsentative Darstellung der niederländischen Malerei zwischen 1420 und 1498, die vor allem über ihre ausgezeichnete Bildzusammenstellung und die Qualität der Abbildungen einen ebenso suggestiven wie aufschlussreichen Eindruck beim Lesen und Betrachten hinterlässt. Der Bildband wird dem Anspruch seines Autors, "einen allgemeinen und präzisen Überblick" über die altniederländische Malerei zu geben, ohne Zweifel gerecht; der Text bewegt sich dabei sicher auf diesem kunsthistorisch schon reichlich bestellten Feld, bleibt aber immer verständlich und nah an der Hauptsache, den Bildern der flämischen Meister. Cyriacus d'Ancona hätte seine Freude daran. Obwohl antiquarisch war das Buch im Besten Zustand und entsprach in der Ausführung der Abbildungen und dem Text genau meinen Vorstellungen. Empfehlung speziell für Kunstliebhaber! Dirk de Vos, Konservator des Groeningemuseums in Brügge und Publizist, von dem unter anderem Monographien über Hans Memling und Rogier van der Weyden erschienen sind, hat hier 20 Meisterwerke zusammengestellt, die wegweisend für die niederländische Malerei der Jahre 1420 bis 1500 sind. Ein repräsentativer Querschnitt ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Es handelt sich nicht um eine Geschichte der Malerei dieser Epoche, wie Dirk de Vos im Vorwort schreibt. Man erhält aber sehr wohl einen Überblick. Vor allem aber macht es Spaß den Ausführungen von Dirk de Vos zu folgen. Einerseits erörtert er akribisch die Bildbestandteile, andererseits geht er auf Provenienz, Hintergrund des Malers oder andere Themen ein. Sein Fachwissen hat mich immer wieder tief beeindruckt. Zusammen mit den zahlreichen Farbbildungen (darunter unzählige Detailbetrachtungen) war dieses Fachwissen, von dem ich sehr profitieren konnte, ausschlaggebend für die Höchstbewertung. Des Weiteren versteht es Dirk de Vos sehr anschaulich zu beschreiben. Kein Fachchinesisch, kein Theoretisieren, sondern eine gut verständliche Sprache. Den eigentlichen Bildanalysen vorangestellt ist eine kurze Einleitung. Was ist charakteristisch für die niederländische Malerei des 15. Jahrhunderts? Wie veränderte sich damals die Malerei?
