This book is written in two main sections. In Part 1, we'll explore the concept of retirement and what a successful retirement looks like from the angle of health and fitness. Then, since history is my biggest passion after fitness, we'll have a look at the history of exercise and how and why our collective activity level took a nosedive during the 20th century. We'll also examine five myths of aging, and why they are just that - myths. Then we'll finish Part 1 with a wrap up of why exercise is so important, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well. Many studies indicate that physical activity reduces depression and anxiety, while enhancing self-esteem and confidence.Part 2 reads a little more like an instruction manual, in that it covers the logistics of getting started in an exercise routine, goal setting, establishing a routine and so forth. You'll also read descriptions and see photos of exercises that would be beneficial to incorporate in your routine. And, we'll end with a chapter on what to be aware of when you're looking for a gym and a personal trainer. Interspersed throughout the book you'll find some additional information intended to motivate and inform you.I have a lot of great clients, but there are some who are particularly inspiring. I've shared some of their stories in extended sidebars. There are several other types of sidebars, as well, offering fitness tips, reliable sites for additional information and just some interesting snippets of information. Finally, the book begins and ends with recaps of two Sunday morning phone calls with my father, also John Monteleone. Many of my Sundays begin with a phone call from my dad. It's always the best part of my day, and I thought I'd share a couple of them with you.
