Historically accurate, this novel gets the reader closer to the war than any straight history book. The story accurately depicts both sides of the conflict without judgement. The images of war are remarkable and place the reader in the midst of battle. Sub plots are numerous and all come together during the siege when the Viet Minh wrench their independence from the French.
