This is another story by Ernest Haycox that needs to be read and praised for what it is--good story-telling set against the backdrop of the American West. John France was a stranger in town and his very presence was a threat to the cattle rustlers so he had to be eliminated. But France was not the tenderfoot the outlaws took him to be, and he goes "on the prod" after they try to kill him. This story was also published under the title of On the Prod. This early work by Haycox shows the coming greatness as an author which soon manifested itself with titles such as, Riders West, Free Grass, The Wild Bunch, The Adventurers, and The Earthbreakers. Don't leave this one out of your collection.
