Less celebrated in the U.S. than the male novelists of the Latin American "Boom"--Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso, and their predecessor Jorge Luis Borges--Clarice Lispector's stories in Family Ties are tales of existential crisis and domestic imprisonment. Her stream of consciousness techniques owe a debt to Woolf and Katherine Mansfield. Lispector is acute at dramatizing her woman characters' inner lives in language that is by turns poetic and philosophical. Often her characters exist in a condition of terrible isolation, are trapped by social conventions, and search for release or seek communion among animals. "The Imitation of the Rose" is one of Lispector's most remarkable stories for her use of symbol. Truly, a profound writer.
