MY book club selected this book based on the glowing reviews we found, but none of us thought it was well written. Personally, I read it just after two major family funerals and found it profoundly depressing. The characters never came to life, the storm, a major character, was kind of left out, and the behavior of the townspeople was baffling. I wonder if it is meant to be a parable, but of what I could not say. It reminded me of Saramago's tales, like his book Blindness, but this book is not as great as that. I'd say skip it, there are so many other great books to read.
